Antioxidant Activity and Selenium and Polyphenols Content from Selected Medicinal Plants Natives from Various Areas Abundant in Selenium (Poland, Lithuania, and Western Ukraine)

Abstract: The study was performed on Centaurea cyanus, Chamomilla recutita, Majorana hortensis, Ocimum basilicum, Plantago lanceolata, Sinapis alba, and Valeriana officinalis harvested in Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine. Our aim was to determine the differences in selenium concentrations, total polyphenols, and the antioxidant activity in same-species samples from different regions. Another goal was to assess the correlations between these variables within the species. We found variations in most species, but not in all … Show more

“…Furthermore, higher serum antioxidant levels improve PUFAs levels in broiler meat either by inhibiting the desaturase enzyme activity or improving the enzyme activity, which converts SFA into PUFA (Chung and Choi 2016). Moreover, PL contains selenium, an essential mineral for the anti-oxidative process, ranging from 40 $ 50 mg/kg DM, which improved PUFAs content in broiler meat (Puerto et al 2017;Sotek et al 2019). In this experiment, the PL80 group had higher serum antioxidant levels, and the PUFAs content was highest in the PL120 group, which conflicts with the previous argument.…”

“…Our data are in agreement with other reports indicating the relationship between total phenolics content and antioxidant capacity [ 39 , 40 ]. Conversely, Sotek et al [ 30 ] did not find in plantain a correlation between TotP and antioxidant capacity with ABTS assay.…”

“…A content of total phenolics of 53 mg of tannic acid equivalent 100 g −1 DW was found in leaves of plantain grown in Ukraine by Sotek et al [ 30 ]. This value is quite lower than our results, but the extraction was done with water and the samples were not freeze dried.…”

“…Reactive oxygen species, such as H 2 O 2 , affect cell membrane integrity by damaging proteins, lipids, pigments, and nucleic acids, which accelerates cut flower senescence. The antioxidative mechanism plays a major role in controlling flower senescence by activating enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), that antagonize the effects of reactive oxygen species [9][10][11][12]. Microbial growth affects the physiology of cut flowers by blocking vessels via the deposition of dead bacteria and the macromolecules formed through bacterial degradation.…”
