Antioxidant Activity of Carvone and Derivatives against Superoxide Ion

Abstract: Carvone has corroborated its versatility as starting material for building blocks synthesis in organic chemistry, being achieved a new chiral lactone. It has been done a study on the antioxidant activity against superoxide of carvone and a chloro derivative that show the potent activity of the natural product (R)-carvone, 1.

“…The antioxidant activity of A. polystachya essential oil is likely due to the high oxygenated monoterpene content [ 19 ], under which carvone is most representative [ 20 ]. Carvone is an oxygenated monoterpene with a double bond conjugated with a ketone group, which gives it greater capacity to capture free radicals and better reducing power [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Indeed, high carvone content has been linked to antioxidant activity in Mentha spicata and M. gracilis essential oils [ 24 ], as well as in essential oils of different species of the Verbenaceae family like Lippia alba and Phyla nodiflora [ 22 , 25 , 26 , 27 ].…”

“…In DPPH• scavenging assays, similar antioxidant activity to the reference compound ascorbic acid (21.4%) was observed for carvone (25.9%) and its chloro derivative (22.6%). On the other hand in NO• scavenging assays, carvone and its derivative showed much lower antioxidant activity (13.24% and 14.08%, respectively) as compared to reference curcumin (24%) 113 …”

“…The mean IC 50 values of samples (1-8) were 175.2, 310.5, 169.5, 221.5, 165.5, 195.0, 225.0, and 165.5 µg/mL respectively, which were compared with the standard antioxidant rutin (IC 50 2.93 µg/mL). The potential antioxidant activity exhibited by the essential oil may be due to the presence of a variety of chemical compounds like β-caryophyllene [36,37], (E)-cinnamaldehyde [38], carvacrol [39], carvone [40], cembrene [41], eugenol [42], methyl palmitate, palmitic acid, oleic acid [28,43], α-copaene [44], α-himachalene [45], α-humulene [46], α-terpineol [47], and δ-cadinene [48] which are present in the these samples. All these compounds are collectively responsible for antioxidant activity.…”
