Antioxidant Activity, Sun Protection Activity, and Phytochemical Profile of Ethanolic Extracts of Daemonorops acehensis Resin and Its Phytosomes

Abstract: Daemonorops (Indonesian: jernang) resin is one of Indonesia’s leading non-timber forest products and can be developed as a source of natural antioxidants and sun protection. This study aimed to select promising solvents for extracting a Daemonorops acehensis resin and phytosome formulation with high antioxidant capacities and sun protection factor (SPF) values. Jernang resin was extracted using a water–ethanol mixture in five different ratios. The promising extract was then mixed with soy lecithin in three dif… Show more

“…Daemonorops which produces jernang resin is only found in Indonesia and Malaysia [2]. Seed cultivation is rare nowadays due to forest destruction, instead generative breeding using seeds can be used to produce seeds in large quantities.…”

“…Intrinsic factors include genetics, cell metabolism, and hormones, while outside factors include ultraviolet (UV), infrared, and environmental carcinogens such as air pollution [1]. Long-term UV radiation is the main extrinsic factor causing skin aging [2]. Ecological conditions in Indonesia trigger premature skin aging faster, so the demand for antiaging products in Indonesia is very high.…”
