Antioxidant and Antinociceptive Effects of Citrus limon Essential Oil in Mice

Abstract: The antioxidant and antinociceptive activities of Citrus limon essential oil (EO) were assessed in mice or in vitro tests. EO possesses a strong antioxidant potential according to the scavenging assays. Moreover, it presented scavenger activity against all in vitro tests. Orally, EO (50, 100, and 150 mg/kg) significantly reduced the number of writhes, and, at highest doses, it reduced the number of paw licks. Whereas naloxone antagonized the antinociceptive action of EO (highest doses), this suggested, at leas… Show more

“…Citrus limon (L.) Burm is a plant from north-northeastern Brazil and is known by the popular name of “limoeiro” [58,59]. In the study by Campêlo et al [26], essential oil from the leaves of Citrus limon (50, 100 and 150 mg/Kg, p.o.) was tested using acetic acid-induced writhing, formalin and the hot plate test.…”

“…The hydrodistillation of C. 9 limon dried leaves lead to isolation of an oil that exerts a significant antioxidant effect against peroxyl radicals and hydroxyl radical, especially at the highest dose. Moreover, the essential oil showed a significant scavenging ability against NO, but lower concentrations reversed this NO-inhibiting effect [13].…”
