Antioxidant and metal chelating activities of Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl peel, pulp and aerial parts in relation to their total phenol and flavonoid content

Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity and total phenol and flavonoid content of different parts (peel, pulp and aerial parts) of Lagenaria siceraria. Method: Successive extraction was done by cold percolation method using solvents of different polarity viz. petroleum ether, toluene, ethyl acetate, acetone, water. Total phenol content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu's reagent method and flavonoid was determined by aluminium chloride colorimetric method. The antioxida… Show more

“…The aqueous ABTS + solution was diluted with water to obtain an absorbance of 0.7 at 734 nm. Subsequently, 3 mL of ABTS + solution was added to 30 µL of the extracts [25]. After 6 min, absorbance was measured at 734 nm using a Thermo Genesys 10S spectrophotometer (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA).…”

“…In addition, the exalted levels of ROS can cause not only the senescence and damage of biological functions such as lipid membrane peroxidation, DNA deterioration, cell death but also human's disease, namely, cancer, stroke, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, arteriosclerosis, infection, and autoimmune disease (Popoola et al 2015). It has been carried out that an antioxidant provided a great potential to defend ROS and deplete the oxidative stress, thus, a compound with the strong antioxidant activity additionally facilitates the skin protecting against the oxidative damages along with delaying the skin aging process (Chanda et al 2015;Palmer and Kitchin 2010).…”
