Repeated chromatographic separation and purification of pet-ether and carbon tetrachloride soluble fractions of a methanol extract of stem bark of Mesua nagassarium (Burm. f.) Kosterm yielded five compounds. Extensive spectroscopic studies, including high field NMR analyses was conducted to identify these compounds which resulted to be friedelin (1), 3-friedelanol (2), lupeol (3), 3-oxo-betulin (4) and spinasterol (5). Although compounds 1-3 have been reported from various plant species, but 3-oxo-betulin and spinasterol have been discovered from M. nagassarium (Burm. f.) Kosterm for the first time.

Garcinia speciosa Wall.is Thai medicinal plant used as remedies for healing skin infections and wounds, a laxative (bark), inflammation, astringent (leaves) agents, diarrhoea (fruits) and antibacterial.This plants were rich source of oxygenated xanthones, some of which have antitumor promotive activity. Dried leaves and twigs of G. speciosa extracted with ethanol and chromatography with Diaion20 column by H 2 O, methanol and ethyl acetate gave 3 fractions. The crude extracted of H 2 O, methanol and ethyl acetate fractions were tested by cytotoxic against to the lung cancer cell lines (A 549) gave ED 50 values of 62, 45 and 75μg/ml, respectively. Hence, the crude methanol fraction was interested for chemical constituents and identified cytotoxic activities. Crude methanol fraction was fractionated by si gel column, used of ethyl acetate-hexane (7:3) gave macluraxanthone was major compound. Structure elucidated by 1H, 13C and 2D NMR spectroscopy. The antioxidant of macluraxanthone by DPPH showed IC 50 was 7.65μg/ml and the cytotoxic test of lung cancer cell lines (A 549) gave ED 50 values 15.38 μg/ml.

Melanoma is a predominant cause of skin cancer-related deaths. It was reported that, the methanolic extract of Pouzolzia Indica (P. indica) on chromatography gave five compounds (1-hentriacontanyl palmitate, myricyl alcohol, 6,7-dimethoxycoumarin, trichadonic acid and friedelane), which inhibited the acute promyelocytic leukemia cell lines, NB4, and HT93A. Friedelane was extracted as active compound from methanolic extract of P. indica. In this study, friedelane was tested on murine metastatic B16F10 and B16BL6 melanoma cell lines. To achieve the target, the cell viability using trypan blue exclusion, acridine orange/EtBr staining and cell cytotoxicity were tested using MTT assay. Caspase-3, caspase-9, Cyt-c, BAD and Bax protein were assayed to evidence the apoptosis induction. The compound friedelane shows potent cytotoxic effect against metastatic melanoma mouse cell lines in 10 µg/ml concentration.
