Antisynthetase syndrome: An under-recognized cause of interstitial lung disease

Abstract: Background:Antisynthetase syndrome (AS) is an uncommon and under-recognised connective tissue disease characterized by the presence of antibodies to anti-aminoacyl t-RNA synthetase along with features of interstitial lung disease (ILD), myositis and arthritis. The aim of the current study is to describe our experience with management of AS.Materials and Methods:This was a 2-year (2013-2014) retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with anti-Jo-1-related AS. The presence of anti-Jo-1 antibody was tested by … Show more

“…The CT- and histomorphologic pattern of ILD in anti-synthetase syndrome can vary between non-specific interstitial and organizing pneumonia (97). Antibodies against PL-7 and PL-12 are positive in up to 5% of IIM patients.…”

“…Although pleural effusion is quite a common finding in patients with connective tissue diseases, in particular in rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, it is not frequent in patients with ASS [ 17 ]. Only few cases have been reported of ASS-associated pericardial effusion, and indeed this finding was present in only 3 cases in our experience [ 18 ].…”

“…The former is an uncommon disease of connective tissue. Affected humans produce antibodies to anti-aminoacyl t-RNA synthetase and manifest with signs of myositis, arthritis, and also interstitial lung disease ( 14 , 15 ). Samples of musculature from humans with LGMD also can show evidence for perifasciular atrophy on histopathology.…”
