Apatite fission-track study on the thermo-tectonic history of the Huainan Coalfield in Anhui Province, China: Tectonic implications for the potential coalbed methane resource

Abstract: Coalbed methane (CBM) is a kind of burgeoning and enormously potential clean energy resource, and the temperature of the thermogenic CBM generation is close to that of the partial annealing zone (PAZ) of apatite fission tracks (AFT). In this study the thermo-tectonic history of the Huainan Coalfield and the potential CBM resource were studied and discussed by using the AFT method. The AFT data indicate that the apparent ages of AFT vary from 45.5 to 199.1 Ma. They are younger than the ages of their host strata … Show more

“…However, the R o,max values of Zhaoji district samples ranged from 0.84%-1.2%, which are mainly fat gas coal and fat coal (according to ISO11760). In general, the coal rock in both districts showed a similar level of thermal evolution, which dramatically differed from Huainan field (Li & Peng, 2009), suggesting different gas-generating mechanisms. The wider range of Suntuan district R o,max values compared with that of Zhaoji district is attributed to the differences in geologic age and maturity.…”

“…Over the years, this method has been exposed to many shortcomings in the research and development of energy materials. For example, the mixing uniformity is poor, it is easy to cause unstable combustion of the product, and there are always hidden dangers of static electricity and explosion accidents in the product preparation process, etc. This has led many countries to abandon it when preparing energetic materials. Therefore, it is imperative to use better technology to prepare transient thermal expansion rock cracking agents.…”
