Apelin and nutritional status in children on dialysis

Abstract: Background: We aimed to evaluate whether serum apelin could reflect the nutritional status of children on dialysis. Methods: Twelve patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and 20 patients on hemodialysis (HD) were enrolled. Patients received individualized diet for six months. Anthropometric and laboratory indices were measured at onset and the end of the study. Results: The anthropometric indices were all significantly lower in patients than in controls whereas similar in PD and HD patients. The protein cataboli… Show more

“…20 In 2014, Yavuz S. et al reported that serum apelin levels in children were similar in PD, HD and control groups. 21 In our study we found that apelin level was significantly higher in PD patients than healthy individuals. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate this finding.…”

“…Serum Apelin level was found to be significantly decreased in the HD patients with non‐diabetic coronary artery disease (CAD) . It has been postulated that Apelin may be the target molecule in slowing down the atherosclerotic process in pediatric HD patients .…”

“…On the other hand, the correlation between apelin and CRP was found to be controversial. Some studies reported a positive correlation between CRP and apelin [27] and that the upregulation of apelin in response to inflammation is possibly a compensatory mechanism to limit the metabolic consequences [28]. Other studies found a negative association between CRP and apelin [29], [30], these studies attributed this result to the anti-inflammatory role of apelin.…”
