Background. This study aimed to systematically and comprehensively review the effect of various treatment variables on apically extruded debris (AED) during non-surgical root canal retreatment (NSRCRT). Methods. The study protocol is shared in the Open Science Framework database (https://osf. io/kjtdg/?view_only=17060180705745ec9dae9a01614f3880). An electronic search was conducted up to July 2022 to reveal related studies. Two reviewers critically assessed the studies for eligibility against inclusion and exclusion criteria and data extraction. Quantitative data synthesis was performed, and the risk of bias in the studies was also evaluated. Results. Forty-six studies were included in the systematic review and 14 in the meta-analysis. Conflicting or limited evidence was found for the effect of sealer type, obturation technique, and solvent use. The manual instrumentation increased the amount of AED compared to rotary instrumentation during the removal of filling materials (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in the amount of AED between the use of rotary and reciprocating files during the removal of filling materials (P=0.181). Conclusion. Rotary instruments can be recommended instead of manual instruments during the removal of filling materials to control the amount of AED. Further studies with a low risk of bias are needed to clarify the effect of other treatment variables on AED during NSRCRT.

Introduction: The endodontic preparation depends largely on the file systems that are used in the canal preparations. The amount of the intracanal debris that is extruded from the apex may be influenced by the file systems. Hence, the present in vitro study evaluated the amount the debris that is extruded for the two file systems at different working lengths. Methods: Forty human mesiobuccal canals of the first molars were collected that were extracted for various causes. They were equally divided to four groups of Reciproc (full length), Reciproc (short by 1 mm), WaveOne Gold (full length), and WaveOne Gold (short by 1 mm). Routine crown-down technique was followed for the canal preparation with the intermittent irrigation. The extruded debris was weighed and compared for the significance. Results: The amount of the debris that was extruded weighed similarly in all the four groups with no significant variations. The Reciproc extruded lesser material than the WaveOne Gold. Conclusions: The file systems seem not to affect the debris extrusion irrespective of the files’ physical properties. Further studies in a clinical setup are warranted.

Background Tricalcium silicate-based sealers have been usually indicated for the single-cone technique and result in more residual filling materials in root canal retreatment. Passive ultrasonic irrigation and photon-initiated photoacoustic streaming have been reported to improve the removal efficacy of root canal filling materials. However, the abilities of both techniques combined with NiTi re-instrumentation to remove residual tricalcium silicate-based sealer and gutta-percha have not been compared. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of laser-activated and ultrasonic-activated techniques in vitro for the removal of the tricalcium silicate-based sealer iRoot SP and gutta-percha after standard canal retreatment procedures with the use of nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments.
