Apolipoprotein E polymorphism in Southern Iran: E4 allele in the lowest reported amounts

Abstract: The frequency of E4 allele as a genetic risk factor for some multifactorial diseases in the population of Southern Iran is in the lowest reported amounts in the world. Iranian population has Caucasoid origin but differs from some Caucasian populations in Europe and America. The results of present study are in agreement with the historical evidences which show admixture of Iranian population with other populations and some studies based on genetic polymorphisms in the population of Southern Iran.

“…The APOE genotype frequencies in our study were similar to the frequencies detected in neighbouring populations (Bazrgar et al 2008; Gerdes, Klausen, Sihn, & Faergeman, 1992); they also did not differ significantly from the study by Bloss et al (2010)—the p -value for differences between these two studies was 0.3. The genotype frequencies were also similar to a study conducted in neighbouring Slavonic/Polish population in which the APOE4 allele was associated with elevated risk of Alzheimer disease (Klimkowicz-Mrowiec et al, 2010).…”

“…The mean age (SD; min-max) of the patients and the controls were 45.4 (9.8; 23-74) and 44.2 (8.6; 24-72) years, respectively. Because Iranian population is one of the most heterogeneous populations (Bazrgar et al, 2008;Mohamadynejad and Saadat, 2008;Rafiee et al, 2010), we selected our patients and controls from Persian (Caucasians) Muslims living in Fars province. Informed consent was obtained from each subject before the study.…”
