Apomixis in Eulaliopsis binata: characterization of reproductive mode and endosperm development

Abstract: Apomixis represents an alteration of classical sexual plant reproduction to produce seeds with essentially clonal embryos, stimulating wide interest from biologists and plant breeders for its ability to fix heterosis. Eulaliopsis binata (Poaceae), is identified here as a new apomictic species. Embryological investigation indicates that the developmental pattern of embryo sac formation in E. binata represents gametophytic apospory, the embryo originating from an unreduced cell, without fertilization and the mod… Show more

“…Quantitative estimation of such embryos in progeny of apomictic plants was done to know the extent of uncoupling between components (Matzk et al 2001;Weiners et al 2006;Yao et al 2007). Theoretically, if all the three components are allowed to recombine freely, will yield to eight pathways (2 3 ) of seed development.…”

“…We also observed, in H. monacanthus and H. megalanthus, several cases of embryos developing in the chalazal region. This phenomenon has also been reported in a nonflowering seed plant, Gnetum gnemon (Carmichael and Friedman, 1995) and in the apomict Eulaliopsis binata (Yao et al, 2007).…”
