Application of an Alternative Aedes Species (Diptera: Culicidae) Surveillance Method in Botucatu City, São Paulo, Brazil

Abstract: One of the main problems with dengue is the control of Aedes aegypti, its major vector. In Brazil, the current control program for Ae. aegypti and Aedes albopictus populations includes larval density surveys. An interesting alternative is the use of a distinct index, the Premise Condition Index (PCI). This tool relates conditions of property, such as houses and yards, and the degree of shade with the occurrence of Aedes sp. oviposition, and is calculated as scores from 3 to 9. The lowest score indicates proper… Show more

“…The concept of transmission risk is mostly based on the paradigm of basic reproduction rate of the disease (R 0 ; Lieshout et al 2004;Cruz-Pacheco et al 2005), which arose initially in demography (Nishiura and Inaba 2007). Operationally, methods are being developed for mosquito density monitoring, in order to survey the effects of prevention (Nogueira et al 2005). The quick detection of dengue cases is also of first importance (Beckett et al 2005).…”

“…Botucatu is a relative small city, compared with others in this study, with a pronounced cold period. Captures performed in the cold period lead to very few eggs, and during the hot period Aedes albopictus is the major mosquito species (Nogueira et al, 2005).…”

“…The association between gardens and yards and the presence of the vector agrees with the criteria used to defi ne the premise condition index, which was created to identify properties with higher probabilities of vector presence, 23 and agrees with other studies. 10,15 Following the WHO guidelines, 4 studies were conducted to identify the most productive containers, and several of these studies identifi ed container types that simultaneously had low frequencies among the inspected containers and high levels of productivity.…”
