Application of Artificial Intelligence in Marine Corrosion Prediction and Detection

Abstract: One of the biggest problems the maritime industry is currently experiencing is corrosion, resulting in short and long-term damages. Early prediction and proper corrosion monitoring can reduce economic losses. Traditional approaches used in corrosion prediction and detection are time-consuming and challenging to execute in inaccessible areas. Due to these reasons, artificial intelligence-based algorithms have become the most popular tools for researchers. This study discusses state-of-the-art artificial intelli… Show more

“…Literature is full of developing corrosion models, especially during the last three years (2021 -2023) [40,[44][45][46][47]. This singularity (explosion of research works and information) occurred owing to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods [48][49][50][51][52][53]. A comprehensive review and analysis of AI application in corrosion is outside of the scope of this paper.…”

“…The term is frequently applied to the project of developing systems endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason, discover meaning, problem-solving, generalize, perception, and learn from experience. Among the different AI techniques, machine learning (ML), pattern recognition (PR), and deep learning (DL) have recently acquired considerable attention in corrosion engineering [44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52].…”

“…Corrosion is an occurrence that has negative financial effects on some sectors 4 . According to the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) and the World Corrosion Organisation (WCO), the yearly cost of corrosion-related issues worldwide is estimated to be $US2.4 trillion, or 3% of global GDP 2 , 3 . Over 7359 spills with a total release of 3,114,255 barrels, valued at $247,957,000, have occurred in Nigeria as of 2012.…”

“…Researchers have developed models capable of accurately detecting and segmenting corrosion in images. These models have achieved high accuracy in identifying various types of corrosion damage, including corroded segments of quay walls [147], marine-related corrosion in the maritime industry [148], and corrosion in civil infrastructures such as bridges and buildings [149].…”
