Application of computed tomography and stereolithography to correct a complex angular and torsional limb deformity in a donkey

Abstract: CT imaging and stereolithography facilitated the evaluation and surgical planning of a complex limb deformity. This combination of techniques may improve the accuracy of the surgeons' evaluation of complex bone deformities in large animals, shorten operating times, and improve outcomes.

“…The use of 3D printing in general veterinary medicine is already a reality. There have been great advances in the application of this technology in several areas, such as orthopedics 5 , ophthalmology 6 , diagnostic imaging 7 , treatment of large animals 8,9 , surgical planning 10,11 , and especially in the teaching of veterinary medicine 12 . In the latter, research has concentrated particularly on anatomy 13 and surgery 14 .…”

“…A similar case report described a 1.5-year-old donkey with severe angular and torsional valgus deformity of the right tarsus. CT imaging and 3D bone models were used to rehearse the surgery, and a successful closing wedge ostectomy was carried out (Radtke et al 2017).…”

“…On these models, the exact displacement OE/OO can be practiced hands-on and is nowadays strongly recommended in human surgery (Franklin et al 2017;Kwun et al 2017;Winer et al 2017;Lau et al 2018). Recently, reports of using this technique in veterinary medicine have been published (Radtke et al 2017;Oaxley 2018;Lindt et al 2022;Schweinsberg et al 2021).…”
