Application of core X-ray microtomography in oilfield geology

Abstract: The article presents studies devoted to the practical application of computer X-ray microtomography (micro-CT) in oilfield geology. In particular, the authors give results of using the method for sample defectoscopy before petrophysical studies in order to improve the quality of analyzes. The paper includes an example of assessing the depth of core plugging with drilling fluid; assessing the mineral composition by micro-CT; experimental core studies when modeling the thermal effect on the oil source rocks of t… Show more

“…The anatomical orientation of wood structures significantly influences the wood impregnation process (Frias et al, 2021;Hass et al, 2012;Tondi et al, 2013;Ponomarev et al, 2021bPonomarev et al, , 2022. The obtained images of the distribution of the impregnating composition (Figure 4b and d) show that its movement occurs along the path of least resistance in the end direction along large anatomical structures, such as vessels and fibers.…”

“…Buoyancy pressure (6) At the reservoir temperature and pressure, the live oil density is assumed to be ρ 0 = 710 kg/m 3 , and the brine density, ρ w = 1070 kg/m 3 . The resulting ∆ρg = 3530 Pa/m = 0.156 psi/ft.…”

“…For example, if oil did not displace a majority of brine in the small pores, a microporous carbonate formation may not be an IOR target. Applications of our approach to fractured carbonate and sandstone formations, shales, coal seams, and to determination of remaining oil saturation abound, see e.g., [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].…”

“…Because of the existence of obvious stratification and the difference in the thermal expansion of multiphase particles, many cracks inside the oil shale appeared during the heating process. In this experiment, the X-ray Micro Tomography (μCT225kVFCB, shown in Figure 2a) was used to scan the internal structure inside the oil shale at different pyrolysis temperatures, and a series of grayscale images reflecting the internal microfine features were obtained [33][34][35]. According to the relationship between the ray intensity and material density, a clear scanned image was obtained in which white means high density particles and black represents low density material (even void spaces).…”
