Application of Electrosprayed Nanoparticles as Targeted Drug Delivery Systems: A Mini Review

Abstract: Nanoparticles (NPs) are referred to as tiny materials in size ranging from 1 to 100 nm. Unique characteristics of the NPs, including small sizes and high surface area, appropriate reactivity, proper stability, great strength, and many more, have resulted in their wide use in numerous fields. Among different techniques reported for synthesizing the nanoparticles, electro-hydrodynamic atomization or electrospray has been identified as a well-practiced and high efficient technique for the formation of fine and h… Show more

“…Electrospray occurs when a liquid with adequate conductivity is passed through a capillary or nozzle to a high potential, forming single dispersed droplets 11 . Electrospray method holds significance in the synthesis of globular nanoparticles owing to its capacity to generate delicate and uniform particles with superior efficacy 12 . Electrospray additionally permits the encapsulation of hydrophobic and inadequately water‐soluble bioactive substances, bestowing regulated discharge characteristics and elevated encapsulation efficacy.…”

“…In the electrospray process, when the fluid exits the nozzle and enters the electric field, it forms a Taylor cone due to surface tension, and as the electric field increases, the Taylor cone turns into highly charged droplets 28 . This process enables the encapsulation of various drugs, vitamins, and proteins that can be used in targeted drug delivery systems 29–31 . Nano and microcapsules made of polycaprolactone (PCL) can be prepared using electrospray techniques for use in drug applications and growth factor release 32 .…”
