Inflow-control devices (ICDs) were developed to avoid coning problems in long horizontal wells mainly in heterogenous formations, but cause some additional drawdown which does not contribute to rate increase. This rate reduction is seen to be impairment to the productivity of horizontal wells. Therefore, horizontal wells that are equipped with ICDs require a pre-quantification of their productivity by determining skin caused by each ICD nozzle size. This will help prevent additional expenditure that will be spent for a corrective horizontal well intervention. Many authors have proposed equations that can be used to estimate skin due to damage, partial completion, slanted well and perforation. No author has provided a skin equation that can be used to estimate recoverable and productivity loss that may result from the use of inflow control devices. In this work, a 3D numerical model which includes inflow control devices along horizontal wells was used to investigate reservoir and production performances of various ICD nozzle sizes. Different productivity losses from different nozzle sizes were seen as skin and a 0.002ft 2 ICD nozzle flow area estimated to have a zero skin. Consequently, a simple equation for calculating this skin due to restricted fluid entry through ICD nozzles was derived. The derived equation which shows insignificant deviation from skin equation is then used for selecting the right nozzle size for production and recovery optimization from horizontal wells.

The optimal design of Advanced Well Completions (AWCs) is an important step in field development planning nowadays. However, determination of optimum design of (Autonomous) Inflow Control Devices [(A)ICDs] and their integration with Annular Flow Isolations (AFIs) in an advanced well completed across a heterogeneous reservoir is a challenge which has not been addressed properly yet. Most used, variable strength (A)ICD completion design, workflows by industry are based on trial and error evaluations of a static well-reservoir models. Several researchers also suggested relating the strengths of the devices to near wellbore static reservoir properties such as permeability of the encountering layers. Both of these approaches do not capture the dynamic interactions between the well and constantly changing reservoir conditions. Moreover, neglecting mutual dependency of AFI location and (A)ICD design in the traditionally step-by-step (A)ICD-AFI design workflows, may result in a design delivering low overall productivity throughout the field life.A novel, integrated (A)ICD-AFI completion design workflow is presented in this paper. The workflow simultaneously optimises (A)ICDs strengths and number plus locations of AFIs in the horizontal and/or multilateral wells based on field's production lifetime. The approach includes stochastic optimisation algorithm coupled with a reservoir simulator and an in-house completion design programming code. The code is developed to automatically generate various (A)ICD-AFI completion configurations required to determine the optimum completion design while honouring practical concerns and economics. A novel AFI modelling technique developed allows integration of AFIs in the optimisation process.The application of the new and the traditional workflows are illustrated using heterogeneous reservoir simulation models. A significant improvement in total oil production for the wells, designed by the new workflow, was achieved comparing with the wells designed by the traditional workflows. The study aims to help well engineers in designing optimal advanced well completion delivering maximum possible field's added-value.

With an objective to increase the production to 4.0 MM BOPD, Kuwait Oil Company is developing its fields with optimum technology solution. Technological innovations in E&P sector are on growing trend, based on which, KOC included ЉRealize the value from TechnologyЉ in the frame of its strategic objectives. The Key Performance Measure (KPM) of this objective is to adopt new technologies at a scale that ideally addresses the identified challenges. In view of this objective and associated KPM, it was decided to implement the advanced completion technologies in various reservoirs of the Company.KOC has several prolific reservoirs spread all over Kuwait. These reservoirs have mild to severe differences in rock properties and fluid characteristics. Burgan is the major Cretaceous sandstone structure extended all over the Kuwait with varied properties. The permeability of Burgan in general is in multiple Darcy. Its fluid viscosity in NK and SEK is low, in the range of 0.5-3 cP, while in WK it is 28 -30cP. Minagish Oolite in West and Maududd in North are major carbonate reservoirs with varying rock and fluid properties. Horizontal wells are considered superior over conventional vertical wells due to augmented production through increased reservoir contact. However, these wells pose severe production challenges due to variations in permeability, reservoir pressure as well as frictional pressure drop along horizontal length. Hence, equalizing inflow, delay water breakthrough, minimizing heel-to-toe effects and maximizing the ultimate recovery are the primary challenges to be addressed to gain advantages of horizontal wells.One of the promising technologies to address these challenges is the advanced completions: inflow control device (ICD) and Interval control valves (ICV). The campaign of application of advanced completions in KOC was started in 2009 under the umbrella of R&T. The completions include various types of ICVs and ICDs. The latter includes passive ICD, Advanced ICD with sliding sleeve, Autonomous ICD without moving parts and ICD with stimulation port. The technology application was based on its value addition and Company's commercial group policies, while maintaining the technical superiority. The technology was trialed successfully in series in various fields and reservoirs through best practices and multi-disciplinary team approach. The focus was made to avoid drawbacks in pilot stage to avoid disapproval of the technology by management. Application of this technology led to multifold increase in sustained production in horizontal wells in all reservoirs and simultaneous reduction in water cut. This paper covers the results of the advanced completion pilots, application methodology & novel practices and selection criteria that ultimately led to tremendous increase in production and full-scale field implementation of the technology.
