Application of Ionic Liquids in Hydrometallurgy

Abstract: Ionic liquids, low temperature molten salts, have various advantages manifesting themselves as durable and environmentally friendly solvents. Their application is expanding into various fields including hydrometallurgy due to their unique properties such as non-volatility, inflammability, low toxicity, good ionic conductivity, and wide electrochemical potential window. This paper reviews previous literatures and our recent results adopting ionic liquids in extraction, synthesis and processing of metals with an… Show more

“…Russian researchers also applied the solvometallurgical methods to recover metals from complex silica-rich ores (e.g., eudialyte), urban waste, and pellets of nuclear fuel [16][17][18][19]. In recent years, there has been progress in the use of ionic liquids and deep-eutectic solvents in metallurgical processes, ranging from leaching, to solvent extraction, and the electrodeposition of metals [20][21][22][23]. The term ''ionometallurgy'' was coined for metallurgical processes involving the ionic solvents [24], but ionic-liquid processes are solvometallurgical as well.…”
