Application of Nanocomposites from Bees Products and Nano-Selenium in Edible Coating for Catfish Fillets Biopreservation

Abstract: Bee products, e.g., chitosan and propolis (Pro), have extraordinary importance in many disciplines including food biopreservation. Fish meat is highly susceptible to vast spoilage, especially catfish (Clarias gariepinus) products. The current work involved the extraction of bees’ chitosan nanoparticles (BCht), Pro, Pro-mediated SeNPs and their composites, to evaluate them as potential antimicrobial and preservative nano-compounds, for the preservation of catfish fillets and augment their quality. BCht was extr… Show more

“…The thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) determination method was slightly modified according to our previous studies (Farajzadeh et al., 2016; Youssef et al., 2022). The method is based on the great reactivity of the thiobarbituric acid with carbonyl compounds that may arise as a consequence of lipid oxidation in shrimp.…”

“…One of the ways to enhance the antibacterial and antifungal properties of SeNPs is their functionalization with enzymes and polymers during synthesis or inclusion in a polymer matrix. Examples of such components can be: arabinogalactan, propolis, lysozyme, bacterial cellulose, gelatin, reduced graphene oxide, chitosan, collagen and ε-poly-L-lysine [121,125,[168][169][170][171][172][173]. The addition of SeNPs to textile fiber significantly enhances their antimicrobial properties [122,174].…”
