Application of Oncolytic Viruses for Cure of Colorectal Cancer

Abstract: Abstract:Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed and lethal cancers worldwide. It is the resultant of multistep processes caused by the accumulation of genetic/epigenetic aberrations. The different therapeutic strategies like radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery, used individually or in different combinations, do not remove tumors or their progression all the time. Besides, these procedures involve surrounding cells and tissues. In case of surgery, which is possible only before metastasis, ev… Show more

“…4 Radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which are commonly used for treating cancers, act in an unspecific manner and cause damage to normal cells and even surrounding noncancerous tissues. 1 Despite huge advances made in diagnosis, surgery, and systemic therapy, the disease still remains one of the most common causes of death, highlighting the necessity to invent new strategy to combat the disease. 5 , 6 The most common site of metastases for CRC is the liver; 7 , 8 therefore, liver resection is a common choice for treating the disease.…”

“…First and foremost is by directly causing infection and then replicating in cancer cells. Normal cells quickly undergo apoptosis on virus infection, resulting in abortive infection, while cancer cells which have acquired apoptosis resistance survive longer, leading to production of more virus particles and initiating new replication cycles 10,11 . The non-lytic strains, present the viral proteins on the tumor cell membrane post infection and thus are capable to initiate and enhance the immune response 3,12 .…”
