“…Thorough biological methods treat soil contamination through bioremediation mechanism, which is a rapidly-developing way for restoration of natural processes in the environment (5). Common biological soil treatment methods are phytoremediation (12,15), land farming (16,17), SVE (18), bioventing (19), natural attenuation (20,21), biopile (22), and bioreactor (13,23). The cheapest method is natural attenuation, but mostly requires the longest time for the treatment process and is not effective on most of the PAHs.…”

“…Similarly, in a field trial, Paudyn et al ( 2008 ) reported >80 % contaminant (diesel) removal by aeration using rototilling approach at remote Canadian Arctic location over a 3-year study period; this further demonstrates that in land farming technique, aeration plays crucial role in pollutant removal especially at cold regions. Land farming is usually used for remediation of hydrocarbon-polluted sites including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (Silva-Castro et al 2012 ; Cerqueira et al 2014 ); as a result, biodegradation and volatilization (weathering) are the two remediation mechanisms involved in pollutant removal. Land farming system complies with government regulations, and can be used in any climate and location (Besaltatpour et al 2011 ).…”

“…Successful alternative that overcomes the problem of quick dilution and wash out of watersoluble nutrients containing nitrogen and phosphorus is oleophilic biostimulants. The application of N and P sources in oleophilic form is considered to be the most effective nutrient application method, since oleophilic additives remain dissolved in the oil phase and thus are available at the oil-water or oil-sediment interface where they enhance bacterial growth and metabolism [43,51].…”
