Application of T-Pattern Detection and Analysis in Sports Research

Abstract: Abstract:The following paper introduces a new approach to the analysis of sports and motor skill performance. The approach, known as T-pattern detection, is explained and preliminary data analyses from soccer, boxing, basketball, swimming and motor skill analysis are presented. The data show that specific temporal patterns can be identified within sports performances. The temporal patterns can relate to performance of specific actions (e.g. passes) or movement patterns. Further analysis showed a significant co… Show more

“…In line with these needs, the most recent studies in the eld of sport have underlined the importance of identifying visual undetectable structural regularities in order to better assess the complex reality they refer to ( One approach that can meet these needs involves the detection of temporal patterns, known as T-patterns, in order to reveal hidden yet stable structures which underlie the interactive situations during football matches. Studies based on the T-pattern method have been conducted in very di erent sport domains apart from football, such as boxing, basketball, swimming and handball (Jonsson et al, 2010). is methodology is based on observational design, allowing the analysis of all the relevant information about any aspect related to any interactions linked with primary factors.…”

“…In contrast to the RP approach, where the underlying data are interval-scaled, the T-patterns are based on categorical event data which describe the beginning and the end of certain behaviour performed by an agent. The T-patterns approach has already been applied to investigate some game sports, including soccer [26]. The event categories in this soccer research were pass, tackle, header or run, and the field of play was separated into discrete zones.…”

“…Considering the findings of research [26], and due to the similarity of the methods, RP and RQA seem to be promising approaches for shedding light on game sport behaviour. The RP analyses are based on the positional information of players in this research and thus focus on the dynamic of the game rather than on specific events.…”
