Application Progress of O3/UV Advanced Oxidation Technology in the Treatment of Organic Pollutants in Water

Abstract: Organic pollution is a significant challenge in environmental protection, especially the discharge of refractory organic pollutants in chemical production and domestic use. The biological treatment method of traditional sewage treatment plants cannot degrade such pollutants, which leads to the continuous transfer of these pollutants into the water environment. Therefore, it is necessary to study clean and efficient advanced treatment technologies to degrade organic pollutants. The ozone/UV advanced oxidation p… Show more

“…The additional implementation of UV light, catalysts, hydrogen peroxide, or their combinations have been employed. [35,81,82] This approach has proved to increase the degree of mineralization of organic matter. However, more research is required to study the increased number of interactions and the possibility of radical scavenging between processes.…”

“…In recent years, the ozonation indirect pathway has been exploited to increase the oxidative potential of ozone processes by intensification with other AOPs. The additional implementation of UV light, catalysts, hydrogen peroxide, or their combinations have been employed [35,81,82] . This approach has proved to increase the degree of mineralization of organic matter.…”

“…Due to the increase in world population and continuous industrial and agricultural development, an increasing trend in organic pollutants in water sources has been observed worldwide [ 1 , 2 ]. Organic pollutants contained in wastewater have serious effects on the environment, human health, and consequently on the economy [ 3 , 4 ]. Moreover, water is a valuable source that needs to be adequately treated, recycled, and conserved so that it can continue to be used in all aspects of life and to protect the environment from the serious effects of organic pollutants.…”

“…4,5 Therefore, developing efficient technologies to remove organic contaminants from wastewater is an urgent issue in water management. Several physical or chemical methods have been explored to treat organic wastewater: solid-phase adsorption, 6 advanced oxidation reaction, 7,8 membrane separation, 9 biodegradation, 10 photocatalysis, 11,12 coagulation-flocculation, 13 and electrochemical treatment. 14 Advanced oxidation involves high oxidation efficiency and thorough mineralization of organics.…”
