Applications of SQL for Informetric Data Processing

Abstract: Many informetric phenomena lend themselves to ready adaptation to relational DBMS environments. SQL, the standard language used for constructing and querying relational databases, provides useful tools for processing of informetric data. The author demonstrates the applications and some limitations of SQL for efficient organization and tabulation of raw informetric data.Résumé : Plusieurs phénomènes infométriques se prêtent à une adaptation rapide aux environnements relationnels DBMS. “…Total 1083 1588 In the end, each article selected for this study had 3 sets of keywords assigned by three different classes of metadata creators. The data was stored in a MySQL database and preliminary informetrics analysis was done using SQL scripts as suggested by Wolfram (2005). Descriptive statistics and basic informetric data were collected to provide a good picture of the scope of the collected data.…”

“…An interesting measure for examining term usage in tagging is the measure of user vocabulary length, most often used to analyse search query logs. (Wolfram 2005) This data represents all the tags used by a specific user in the data set. The largest user vocabulary length in the data set was 62, the smallest 1 and the median 2.…”

“…These systems are modelled to maintain a large quantum of information. Fetching a bulk quantity of the same type of data is very effective in databases [3]. However, the user needs to master the database architecture completely in building the queries.…”

“…SQL is comprehensively employed in industry and is supported by major DBMS. In addition, most of the languages used in accessing relational database systems [3] are formed because of SQL models. Only people who have the technical understanding or knowledge of these languages can have access to the information [4] in the database.…”
