The chemical, temporal, and spatial resolution of chemical signals that are sampled and transported with continuous flow is limited because of Taylor dispersion. Droplets have been used to solve this problem by digitizing chemical signals into discrete segments that can be transported for a long distance or a long time without loss of chemical, temporal or spatial precision. In this review, we describe Taylor dispersion, sampling theory, and Laplace pressure, and give examples of sampling probes that have used droplets to sample or/and transport fluid from a continuous medium, such as cell culture or nerve tissue, for external analysis. The examples are categorized, as follows: (1) Aqueous-phase sampling with downstream droplet formation; (2) preformed droplets for sampling; and (3) droplets formed near the analyte source. Finally, strategies for downstream sample recovery for conventional analysis are described.

This paper represents the design, fabrication, and implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based electrochemical microfluidic system for free calcium concentration detection with a 3D printing technique. Free calcium solutions with desired concentrations between 0 and 40 µM can be obtained. The solutions were used to calibrate the system by using an impedance analyzer for monitoring the impedance change to determine the operating frequency. Continuously, an IoT enabled point of care device was used for real-time detection and to send signals to the cloud for sharing. The relationship between the concentration and reactance are y = −1.3812Lgx + 0.9809 at a wavelength of 450 Hz, with an R 2 of 0.9719. We measured the calcium concentration changing from 39.8 µM to 1.35 µM (nearly real-time) by the PoC device and showed the concentration changes resulting with time on the cell phone app. The results depicted in this paper provide a strong platform for the precise and real-time monitoring of different biomedical samples. Different applications had been achieved, especially in the fields of clinical diagnostic and environmental monitoring. This is because of their low cost, ease of use, reliability, and portability [18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. Moreover, some PoC devices can carry out real time testing which can produce results rapidly. By this way, patient-care can be improved with less costs and treatment can start more quickly [25,26].Wireless transmissions and cloud servers enable transferring and sharing the measured data while being connected with the monitored patient, which enhances the functionalities of the sensing systems [27,28]. It is powered by the Internet of Things (IoT) concept, where all the connected objects that surround us can exchange data over a network. IoT-enabled smart devices and health services can reduce the diagnostic cost, provide real-time information to the house physician, and provide important health information without any mobility of the patient, therefore increasing their quality of life and the efficiency [26,29].In this paper, we devised the use of silicon-based sensors integrated into the microfluidics system with 3D printing. IoT techniques were used to store and transmit the data to end-users. One of the prominent biomedical applications was where free calcium iron solutions were measured in different concentrations. Commercial calcium buffer solutions were used to calibrate the system. The determination of free calcium is very important in human and veterinary pathology and in dairy chemistry [30][31][32].

Are diaper usage overused in acute hospital settings? Are there ways to avoid unnecessary diaper usage? This study aimed to identify the prevalence of diaper usage and the reasons of using diaper as well as to suggest strategies to avoid unnecessary use of diaper. Diaper is widely used for patients in hospitals worldwide but is seldom to be report its prevalence. Some patients with medical issues need to use diaper but some who do not have those problems are still given a diaper to wear once admitted. This is a cross‐sectional prevalence survey study from 24 wards covering 3 major departments between 19 and 26 October 2016. Data were sourced from different means such as documents and interviewing patients/relative, nursing and nursing supporting staff. The study was approved by cluster general manager (nursing) who supported the study to improve patient care. The overall prevalence rate of diaper usage during admission was 37·9%. The top four reasons of diaper usage in all departments were faecal/urinary incontinence, poor patient condition, confusion and poor mobilization which accounted for 38, 15, 10 and 8% respectively. A total of 53 patients of those who had not used diapers before admission but were given diapers to wear, reported reasons as having poor mobilization and lower limb weakness. This is the first study ever to explore the prevalence and reasons of diaper usage in Hong Kong. Different reasons to use diapers after admission but patients did not use diaper upon admission could be identified in various department. A clinical guideline on proper use of diaper that identified some gaps of the prevailing practice and possible solutions was suggested to improve clinical practice.
