Applying an Innovative Model of Disaster Resilience at the Neighborhood Level

Abstract: Community resilience is a community’s ability to maintain functioning (ie, delivery of services) during and after a disaster event. The Composite of Post-Event Well-Being (COPEWELL) is a system dynamics model of community resilience that predicts a community’s disaster-specific functioning over time. We explored COPEWELL’s usefulness as a practice-based tool for understanding community resilience and to engage partners in identifying resilience-strengthening strategies. In 2014, along with academic partners, t… Show more

“…Cui and Li ( 2020 ) measured community resilience from the viewpoint of stakeholders’ social capital using the social network analysis (SNA) method. Slemp et al ( 2020 ) explored the usefulness of the Composite of Post-Event Well-Being (COPEWELL), a system dynamics model of community resilience. They understood community resilience and engaged with their partners to identify resilience-strengthening strategies based on COPEWELL.…”

“…Some researchers focus the issues of measurement [ 26 , 43 ], evaluation [ 38 , 44 , 45 ], and assessment [ 17 ] on local emergency resilience; these studies provide a set of indices and methodologies for local emergency resilience estimate under the compound disaster circumstance. Moreover, discussions on the resilient city or city resilience [ 46 , 47 , 48 ] also have positive significance in understanding and enhancing local emergency resilience.…”
