Applying Geometric Morphometrics to Digital Reconstruction and Anatomical Investigation

Abstract: Virtual imaging, image manipulation and morphometric methods are increasingly used in medicine and the natural sciences. Virtual imaging hardware and image manipulation software allows us to readily visualise, explore, alter, repair and study digital objects. This suite of equipment and tools combined with statistical tools for the study of form variation and covariation using Procrustes based analyses of landmark coordinates, geometric morphometrics, makes possible a wide range of studies of human variation p… Show more

“…Photogrammetry has been used over the years in obtaining measurement of objects in a photograph which has evolved from plane table photogrammetry to digital photogrammetry. Its application has been found useful in fields like archaeology, art, medicine where it is used in diagnosis and treatment of human conditions, biomedical research, production of planes of large or complex sites and neuroanatomical sections [1][2][3][4][5]16]. In this study, photogrammetry was applied in order to evaluate facial attractiveness of females during menstruation and ovulation phases of their sexual cycles.…”

“…Systematically adopting realistic simulations of neuroanatomical visualization tools, illustrative videos, and applications accessible directly to students, as well as printed 3D models that can be handled and studied by every student, among other general strategies, such as e-books and recorded video classes, are used for good anatomy learning. These tools will be fundamental in the future development of the profession, since, in addition to the analysis of imaging tests, a situation that is part of the routine of many physicians, the use of these mechanisms can be the differential at the time of planning as detailed by Landi et al ( 9 ), and execution of medical interventions, especially in the surgical field ( 9 ).…”

“…Whilst this study has focused on the qualitative evaluation of the output similar to current radiological practice, there are opportunities to quantitatively assess fetal craniofacial development [65]. Craniofacial research is an active area of exploration in the neonatal and paediatric patient groups with 3D morphometric and shape analysis performed with 3D imaging, 2D and 3D photogrammetry [66][67][68] and emerging prenatal methods have been proposed [60]. Nonetheless, 3D landmark placement for quantitative assessment of our surface craniofacial models would be subject to interobserver variability due to the fine details of the structures and the wide range of resultant model quality.…”
