Elevated and increasing concentration in groundwater affect groundwater supplies in China and elsewhere. However, how groundwater flow affects concentration in groundwater has yet to be fully understood. Herein, multi‐isotopes (15N, 11B, 18O, and 2H) and local indicators of spatial association (LISA) were used to elucidate the spatiotemporal variation, sources, and patterns of and its response to groundwater flow in Poyang Lake Basin where agriculture, industry and urban coexist. The location of hotspots identified by LISA tended to move from the middle to lower reaches of Ganfu Plain with groundwater flow, and hotspots area expanded in the upper reaches of Xin River Basin and northwest of the study area during the transition from dry season to wet season. Our results revealed that variations of regional concentration were controlled by groundwater recharge or flow mode (vertical or lateral), biogeochemical processes and sources (sewage and manure). In some areas with the single stratigraphic structure (unconfined aquifer), spatiotemporal variation of concentration was influenced by local pollution sources and vertical recharge of current precipitation (vertical flow). In some areas with binary structures (confined aquifer), groundwater was mainly recharged by lateral flow and concentration was mainly affected by mixing effect of upstream groundwater, reflecting human activities in the upper reaches rather than local human activities. In lakeside floodplain, groundwater was attenuated by the dissimilatory reduction to . This study provides a novel insight into groundwater flow controlling on spatiotemporal distribution of concentration in the regional scale.

Exploring the water sources taken up by plants is necessary for ecological protection. The purpose of this study was to determine the exact proportions of different water sources absorbed by herbaceous plant species in the wetland of Poyang Lake in an inland humid region. This identified the water sources patterns in wetlands and provide Poyang Lake managers information about the lake water level needed to sustain vegetative life. We analysed the deuterium isotope composition (δ2H) and oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) values in the stem water of dominant herbaceous plant during its different growth stages to explore the proportions of water sources in different growth stages by using the Phillips equation, and the results supported the accuracy. The results indicate that the groundwater should not be lower than 0.13 m, otherwise the Carex cinerascens may not be able to absorb it. In previous studies, the lower slopes and intercepts of δ2H–δ18O were attributed to the secondary evaporation under the cloud, but we found that there is a cumulative evaporation effect in rainwater, soil water, and groundwater, which makes the slopes and the intercepts of δ2H–δ18O relationship lines become lower from top to bottom. In this study, the final effect of evaporation on the δ2H and δ18O values of shallow soil water is depleting the δ2H and δ18O values of shallow soil water, which is different from previous studies. The δ2H and δ18O values of groundwater varied little with changes of seasons and rainfalls. The δ2H–δ18O relationship lines established by various substances can also reflect the regulation of d-excess by large lakes through secondary sources.

Poyang Lake, known as the largest freshwater lake in China, has a pivotal role in floodwater storage and is an internationally recognized habitat for wintering migratory birds (Liao et al., 2020). Located on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Poyang Lake drains into the Yangtze River via a narrow outlet in the north and influences the hydrological characteristics of the Yangtze River Basin (Lai et al., 2014). As the recharge source of lake water, groundwater in Poyang Lake Basin is an indispensable and available resource and plays an extremely important role in the development of social economy and ecology (Liao, Wang, Shi, Cheng, et al., 2018). However, the Poyang Lake Basin has suffered serious ecological environment issues in recent years, such as prolonged droughts, wetland degradation, and water eutrophication (Ye et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2012). Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the groundwater recharge in the Poyang Lake Basin for the sustainable utilization of groundwater and the safety of the entire ecosystem. Some studies have been conducted on the origins of groundwater and hydrologic processes in Poyang Lake Basin by using environmental tracers and revealed that groundwater is predominantly recharged by precipitation and discharges into the Poyang lake (Soldatova et al., 2016; Zhan et al., 2016), which is consistent with the characteristics of wetlands (Hu et al., 2013). There also have been several investigations into the seasonal variations of groundwater isotopic compositions in the Poyang Lake Basin (Shen et al., 2015; Shvartsev et al., 2016). Nevertheless, knowledge gaps still exist in the spatiotemporal variations of hydrological cycles, particularly, in the spatial variations of groundwater stable isotopes and in the spatiotemporal variations of groundwater recharge in Poyang Lake Basin. The study area is located in the subtropical region and is affected by the interplay of the Indian, East Asian Monsoon, and the westerlies and high-latitude inland winds.
