Applying Time Diversity for Improved Reliability in a Real-Time Heterogeneous MAC Protocol

Abstract: Supporting real-time applications over wireless networks is challenging for several reasons. The medium access control (MAC) layer has a key role in enabling real-time guarantees by providing bounded access time to the transmission medium. Unfortunately, even when timely access is granted, transmissions can still be compromised, specially in the wireless domain, due to the unreliable transmission medium. A common way to increase the reliability of a communication system is to apply redundancy in the form of ti… Show more

“…They determine that the effectiveness of these methods and the latency associated with them are closely related, since the more time that passes between transmission and retransmission, the greater the probability of success, but the greater the latency. In [29], the authors point out that wireless interferences can appear with different characteristics of intensity and duration. Therefore, they propose a MAC layer with temporal diversity that adapts the retransmissions to the characteristics of the interferences.…”

“…Temporal redundancy is used to increase its reliability, which means that several replicas of a frame are transmitted, each one separated by the so-called inter transmission time (ITI). Temporal redundancy increases the probability of receiving at least one replica correctly, and it is necessary for links with a higher error rate [17]. In our model, we will assume that the total number of replicas is fixed (= k) for all the wireless links.…”
