Approach to identifying research gaps on vector-borne and other infectious diseases of poverty in urban settings: scoping review protocol from the VERDAS consortium and reflections on the project’s implementation

Abstract: BackgroundThis paper presents the overall approach undertaken by the “VEctor boRne DiseAses Scoping reviews” (VERDAS) consortium in response to a call issued by the Vectors, Environment and Society unit of the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases hosted by the World Health Organization. The aim of the project was to undertake a broad knowledge synthesis and identify knowledge gaps regarding the control and prevention of vector-borne diseases in urban settings.MethodsThe consortium c… Show more

“…The screening of articles occurred in two phases: (1) A selection based on title and abstracts only; and in cases where there was no abstract, the reference was automatically included for full-text screening. We piloted the abstractbased strategy of selection on 50 random references to validate the selection criteria [10]. (2) A selection based on full texts.…”

“…This type of literature review was chosen because it allowed us to identify the types of available evidence in a given field, identify key characteristics or factors related to a concept and to identify and analyse gaps in the knowledge base ( Munn et al , 2018 ). We followed each distinct stage of the framework and, more specifically, the protocol with the improvements of the initial framework made by the VERDAS consortium ( Degroote et al , 2018 ). Although not always applicable, the reporting of the scoping review was guided by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) checklist ( Tricco et al , 2018 ), as described in Supplementary File S1 .…”
