Apps for immunization: Leveraging mobile devices to place the individual at the center of care

Abstract: Mobile technology and applications (apps) have disrupted several industries including healthcare. The advantage of apps, being personally focused and permitting bidirectional communication, make them well suited to address many immunization challenges. As of April 25, 2015 searching the Android app store with the words ‘immunize app’ and ‘immunization app’ in Canada yielded 225 apps. On the Apple App Store a similar search produced 98 results. These include apps that provide immunization related information, p… Show more

“…Smartphones offer an opportunity to enhance immunization practice and facilitate tailored communication between individuals and public health officials. [7][8][9] With increased mobile device and application (app) usage, the potential exists to capture, transmit, and monitor post immunization experience information in real-time using personal mobile devices. Thus mobile apps could potentially serve as a mechanism for AEFI reporting.…”

“…Nudges have been successfully implemented in a number of areas to guide behavior and choices [8,10]. Since an increasing amount of choices today are taking place in digital environments, the design of information in digital interfaces is becoming increasingly important to understand people's choices, hence digital nudging is proposed as an important area of research [19,20]. It is expected to become increasingly important within information systems research and design, as the progression of knowledge within the behavioral and cognitive sciences are needed in the design of interfaces [20].…”

“…In the health area, mobile devices that provide feedback to the user on sleep or physical activity are some examples mentioned in the literature. However, more research is requested, to understand the theoretical basis of nudges in digital interfaces, and how these can inform the design of persuasive systems [20].…”
