Aqueous Electrolytes Based Dye-sensitized Solar Cells using I-/I3-Redox Couple to Achieve ≥ 4% Power Conversion Efficiency

Abstract: We report on the influence of water as an electrolyte on the photovoltaic performances. The photovoltaic performance was shown to be quite sensitive to the substituent on the donor group. An optimized efficiency of 4.41% in the presence of 100% water content using I − /I 3 − redox couple was obtained using the D21L6 organic dye.

“…241 As clearly visible in Table 14 (Table 12) showed that V oc gradually increased with the incremental addition of water (i.e., from 0 to 50%); in contrast, J sc sharply decreased under the same conditions. Again, dyes were found to easily detach due to their partial hydrophilic nature, resulting in the reduction of both photocurrent and efficiency.…”

“…Ko and coworkers further investigated aqueous DSSCs using three different organic sensitizers, namely D5L6, 239 D21L6 240 and JK-310; in particular, the latter two contained (hexyloxy)phenylamine and 4-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethoxy)phenylamine as electron donor units. 241 As clearly visible in Table 14, all of these dyes have a water-soluble substituent and were coupled with an aqueous electrolyte (PMII 2.0 M, I 2 50 mM, GuSCN 0.10 M, TBP 0.50 M and Triton X-100 1 wt% in MPN : H 2 O 50 : 50). PV measurements (Table 12) showed that V oc gradually increased with the incremental addition of water (i.e., from 0 to 50%); in contrast, J sc sharply decreased under the same conditions.…”

“…Such groups have already been employed in the preparation of dyes for water-based DSSCs. 46,47 Conversely, BB2d had two hydrophobic n-hexyloxy substituents on the donor. In addition, dye BB2a' was also prepared to check the effect of having a single alkyl chain on a ProDOT moiety and directly compare the results obtained with those of dyes BB1a and BB2a.…”

“…The low efficiently of the first cycle may be due to undischarged species remaining (Figure S5). The overall limiting factor in this system is the solar energy conversion due to the lesser developed aqueous dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) field with efficiencies generally less than 5% , compared to nonaqueous DSSCs which have much higher efficiencies of >10%. Previously, the extreme conditions typically employed in aqueous RFBs have deterred use with DSSCs …”
