Aqueous ferrofluids as templates for magnetic hydroxyapatite nanocomposites

Abstract: Poly (vinyl) alcohol stabilized aqueous ferrofluids (PVA-ff) were used as nanotemplates for the crystallization of calcium hydroxyapatite (HAp). Four sets of PVA-ff-HAp nanocomposites were synthesized using 20, 40, 60 and 80 ml of PVA-ff for the same initial constituents of HAp. Various physico-chemical analyses suggest that the HAp lattice structure accommodates PVA-ff to a certain extent, beyond which the magnetic intra-molecular interactions predominate and PVA-ff starts to be pushed out of the HAp matrix. … Show more

“…Three well defined peaks at 1,384 cm -1 due to C-N, at 1,645 due to C-O & a band at 3,174 cm -1 due to the stretching of N-H bond was observed in the composite samples because of the presence of proteins/aminoacids in the composites. Iron oxide bands appear at 540, 580 and 630 cm -1 for hematite, magnetite, and maghemite respectively [24,27]. The 580 cm -1 band characteristic of Fe 3 O 4 [28,29] is also shifted significantly to lower wave numbers i.e.…”

“…The emphasis of our group is to emulate the well-known process of 'biomineralization' to obtain a stringent control over the shape and size of the synthesized particles that would result in exotic properties previously non-existent. We have reported synthesis of magnetic HA using a ferrofluid which had high polymer content and hence whose magnetization was not adequate [24]. This is a more in depth study with two novel ferrofluids (stable with negligible polymer) [25] that have substantial magnetization values and show antibacterial properties. )…”

“…37,38 Hence, several iron oxidehydroxyapatite nanocomposites have been described in the literature. [39][40][41][42][43][44][45] However, the Fe 3 O 4 @Cu-apatite has only rarely been explored, and to the best of our knowledge, the use of Fe 3 O 4 @Cu-apatite as a heterogeneous catalyst for the N-arylation of imidazole has not been reported in literature. Fe 3 O 4 is one of the cheaper magnetic oxide, which act in this study as a high surface area framework that is coated by the growth of Cu-apatite shell.…”

“…A number of synthetic methodologies have been described over the last few years (Ansar et al 2012;Mir et al 2010;Muzquiz-Ramos et al 2010;Singh et al 2012;Wakiya et al 2010). However, only two recent reports are related to remediation methods, taking advantage either of photocatalytic activities of the materials for organic degradation (Yang et al 2010) or of the apatite affinity for lead ions (Dong et al 2010).…”
