Arabidopsis thaliana Yellow Stripe1-Like4 and Yellow Stripe1-Like6 localize to internal cellular membranes and are involved in metal ion homeostasis

Abstract: Several members of the Yellow Stripe1-Like (YSL) family of transporter proteins are able to transport metal-nicotianamine (NA) complexes. Substantial progress has been made in understanding the roles of the Arabidopsis YSLs that are most closely related to the founding member of the family, ZmYS1 (e.g., AtYSL1, AtYSL2 and AtYSL3), but there is little information concerning members of the other two well-conserved YSL clades. Here, we provide evidence that AtYSL4 and AtYSL6, which are the only genes in Arabidops… Show more

“…Two of these genes were of unknown function and one (Glyma10g31610) was a yellow stripelike (YSL) ortholog (Table 3). YSLs are membrane located transporters that are important to the intercellular transport of iron and other metals and contribute to the overall metal nutrition in plants (Brear et al 2013;Conte et al 2013). Although metal ion transporters have not been analyzed in detail in plant-aphid interactions, it is possible that they could be part of the cascade of changes that are elicited upon aphid feeding (Boyd 2006;Poschenrieder et al 2006).…”

“…The latter was surprising as phytosiderophores were not expected to be transported in green tissues as they are only present in the root (Curie et al 2001). Indeed, although the release of phytosiderophores is a prerogative of graminaceous plants, YSL transporters are found also in non-graminaceous taxa (Chu et al 2010(Chu et al , 2013. In particular, Arabidopsis thaliana has eight YSL genes (Mäser et al 2001).…”

“…In particular, Arabidopsis thaliana has eight YSL genes (Mäser et al 2001). In addition, YSL transporters have been found to transport NA-Fe 3+ complexes (reviewed by Chu et al 2013), adding to the fundamental role of NA as Fe chelator in both strategy I and strategy II plants.…”
