Arc Plasma Processing of Pt and Pd Catalysts Supported on γ-Al2O3 Powders

Abstract: Direct deposition of Pt and Pd nanoparticles onto c-Al 2 O 3 powders was studied by using a pulsed arc plasma process under vacuum to use them as an automotive catalyst. As deposited Pt catalyst exhibited a higher metal dispersion and thus a higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation, compared to the conventional Pt/Al 2 O 3 prepared by wet impregnation. In contrast, Pd/Al 2 O 3 prepared by the arc plasma method was less active because of its metallic state of Pd with a lower dispersion. A weak interaction bet… Show more

“…However, the Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalysts prepared by impregnation showed larger Pt nanoparticles than those of catalysts prepared by APD. 18 In case of Ce-APD catalyst, ceria deposition over Al 2 O 3 enhanced the dispersion of Pt nano-particles. Thus, TEM images of Ce-APD catalyst showed much smaller size of Pt nanoparticles (≤2 nm in size) through fine dispersion of other catalyst (APD and IMP) samples.…”

“…18 According to Liu et al, 19 preparation of the catalysts using plasmas is waving with the advantages like (i) solvent free condition (ii) no precursor is required (iii) shortened preparation time (iv) a highly dispersed active species (v) reduced energy requirements. Further, we approached quantum chemical calculations to select a suitable anchoring material for the deposition of Pt nano-particles by APD.…”

“…In industry, these nanoparticle catalysts are manufactured by a wet impregnation process. It is essential for these nanoparticles to be size-controllable, to be uniform in size, and when using nanoparticles as catalysts, to be less coagulating (1,2,3). We have developed a direct deposition method of coating nanoparticles onto support powders by using a pulsed arc plasma source (1).…”
