Architectural design and load flow study of power flow routers

Abstract: Power flow routing is an emerging control paradigm for the dynamic and responsive control of electric power flows. In this paper, we investigate the design and modelling of the power flow router (PFR) which is a major building block of power flow routing. First, a generic PFR architecture is proposed to encapsulate the desired functions of PFRs. Then, the load flow model of PFRs is developed and incorporated into the optimal power flow (OPF) framework. Based on the load flow model, the control capabilities of … Show more

“…These two studies found that switching power in the form of packets is possible. Most of the other studies conducted on this area include power routers [17,[49][50][51], power routing algorithms [19,[52][53][54][55][56][57][58] and architectures [59][60][61]. The next two subsections discuss power routers and power routing algorithms in details.…”

“…Recent studies that have been concerned with power routers include [17,[49][50][51]. Abe et al [17] proposed a power router that segments the synchronized wide-area power grid into smaller asynchronous grids which are connected together using multiple IP addressed ACs/DC/ACs converters called Digital Grid Routers.…”

“…To avoid ambiguity, we use PFR to refer to a device that is able to manage multiple power flows, and PFC to one that can only adjust the power flow through one branch or appliance. In our previous work [8], a generic functional model of a PFR that represents the conventional bus has been proposed. In this paper, we use a PFR model [8] shown in Fig.…”

“…Power flow routing is enabled by power flow controllers (PFCs), e.g., flexible alternating-current transmission system (FACTS) devices [3], and power flow routers (PFRs) [8]. Due to the development of power electronic over the past two decades, power flow routing is becoming mature and costeffective for improving asset utilization [7], [9].…”
