Urban environments contain and are part of a wide range of interconnected complex systems, including infrastructures and services. Rapid and often uncontrolled urbanization triggers distributive inequities and environmental injustices, posing urgent and interconnected challenges that demand inter- and transdisciplinary solutions. Despite architecture’s commitment to ‘sustainability’, its central role in urban systems and their dynamics as well as the discipline’s intersections with other disciplines remain relatively little explored. In this contribution, we focus on the water–energy–sanitation (WES) nexus in Brazil, drawing from transdisciplinary workshops, scoping reviews, and systems mapping. We propose a framework for the analysis of urban nexuses. This framework builds on transdisciplinary systems mapping for the identification of nexus components, nodes, and their interconnections. Our findings indicate that a nexus perspective allows us to identify challenges in urban nexuses, productive intersections with the knowledge and approaches from other disciplines, and possible solutions in collaboration with non-academic stakeholders. We advocate for an expanded professional field and a redefined sense of responsibility within the discipline.

This Interventions essay presents 14 stories of, and positions on, urban climates in South Asia. We look analytically and linguistically from this region to engage the terms ‘mahaul’, ‘mausam’ and ‘aab‐o‐hawa’ as critical concepts to conceptualize climate in its political, social, historic, atmospheric, ecological, material, sensory and embodied registers. Gathered together, the stories scaffold a perspective on climate that connects concerns about broader structural conditions (mahaul); local and lived experiences in different temporal registers (mausam) and sociomaterial entanglements that demand new ways of knowing nature (aab‐o‐hawa). An expansive yet grounded conceptualization allows us to narrate individual cases and local climate stories in their multiplicity and difference, rather than through cumulative effects across much wider geographies. This essay on South Asian urban climates provides an analytical frame based on shared colonial history, and geographies connecting experiences of climate across fraught geopolitical borders. These diverse South Asian urbanisms provide evidence of a range of environmental vulnerabilities, while seeking possibilities in already existing climates—in the seas and airs that reorient the experience of land and atmosphere, in centering marginalized voices, in historical remnants to read contemporary urban change, in exploring planning agency grounded in local politics, and from the position of partial knowledge that being within urban climates entails.

Design with Comfort

As anthropogenic climate change destabilizes a fixed idea of climate, it is also destabilizing a fixed idea of comfort. Comfort, like climate, can no longer be understood as a steady index of energetic balance, but is now recognized as condition of flux on which human activity has a direct impact. In this new context, design with comfort can be an effective extension of earlier directives to design with climate. Design with comfort extends architecture's immaterial and discursive aspects to bring attention to more a flexible (in terms of temperature) and inclusive (in terms of populations) concept of comfort. Design with comfort seeks to exploit comfort's latent potential in cultural and aesthetic dimensions. Using comfort to relate climate to construction positions it squarely within architecture culture, and suggests a shared project for a more inclusive group of academics and practitioners. Design with comfort also adds a new aesthetic dimension to creative design practice by actively designing comfort experiences. Today's dominant comfort model holds that comfort is a static state of thermal neutrality that varies little between different locations, different seasons, and different people. In the context of an architectural studio, designing with comfort asks students to consider how comfort is entangled with more familiar elements of design such as form, materials, program and site. Directly addressing comfort as part of design process helps to demonstrate its historical legacy, establish its currency as part of today's environmental reality, and encourage students to think creatively about its implications and possibilities.
