Arctic Oceanic Climate in Late Cenozoic Time

Abstract: Faunal and lithologic evidence is used to reconstruct paleoceanographic events over the last 4.5 million years. The inception of perennial sea-ice cover is dated at about 0.7 million years.

“…Backman (1979), Roberts et al (1982), Schnitker (1982), Shackleton et al (1984), , and Raymo et al (1986), however, used data from other DSDP sites to propose that major IRD input began at 2.4 to 2.6 Ma. The latter proposal correlates well with the timing of IRD initiation in the North Pacific (Krissek et al, 1985;Carney, 1986), while an initiation prior to 2.5 Ma is supported by the presence of IRD in older sediments of the Arctic Ocean (Herman and Hopkins, 1980;Margolis and Herman, 1980). “…It has been proposed that the Arctic Ocean has been permanently icecovered since the late Miocene (Clark, 1982). Other studies conclude that perennial sea-ice cover developed in the Matuyama Chron (0.78 to 2.58 Ma) or at the Brunhes/Matuyama chron boundary (Herman and Hopkins, 1980;Carter et al, 1986;Repenning et al, 1987). Although ice precludes drilling within the central Arctic, drilling by the JOIDES Resolution along the present ice margins will provide sediments to better constrain the history of sea-ice extent.…”
