Graphical IoT device management platforms, such as IoTtalk, make it easy to describe interactions between IoT devices. Applications are defined by dragging-and-dropping devices and specifying how they are connected, e.g. a door sensor controlling a light. While this allows simple and rapid development, it remains possible to specify unwanted device configurations -such as using the same device to drive a motor up and down simultaneously, risking damaging the motor.We propose BigraphTalk, a verification framework for IoTtalk that utilizes formal techniques, based on bigraphs, to statically guarantee that unwanted configurations do not arise. In particular, we check for invalid connections between devices, as well as type errors, e.g. passing a float to a boolean switch. To the best of our knowledge, BigraphTalk is the first platform to support the graphical specification of correct-by-design IoT applications.BigraphTalk provides fully automated verification and feedback without end-users ever needing to specify a bigraph. This means any application, specifiable in IoTtalk, is guaranteed, so long as verification succeeds, not to violate the given configuration constraints when deployed; with no extra cost to the user.

<p>In this paper, a proposal was made to recreate an energy harvesting technique using biomass energy such as twigs, leaves, wood, paper, and charcoal emitted by burning the said materials and harvest the energy from the released heat. The harvested energy is then converted into a voltage that can be used to charge devices such as mobile phones or even turn on emergency lights. In terms of its application, the system can be used to provide backup power during disaster especially during a flood or other causes of power outages. The system can also be used to charge electronic devices during outdoor activities in remote areas where electricity is inaccessible such as camping or other outdoor activities. This system can produce free electric power that can also be extremely beneficial in third world countries. The cost of the module used is also much cheaper than other existing harvesting methods such as solar panels or water turbines. Based on test data collected using IoT platform, charcoal was determined as the best material in terms of output power generated.</p>

DormTalk: edge computing for the dormitory applications on campus

Internet of things (IoT) connects a large number of edge IoT devices to produce huge volumes of data. To effectively manipulate the real-time IoT data, it is essential to integrate edge computing with the cloud computing. This study investigates how real-time IoT applications benefit from edge computing. Specifically, the authors show how edge computing and cloud computing can be nicely integrated to build a smart campus environment in National Chiao Tung University (NCTU). Based on an IoT device management platform called IoTtalk, the authors develop an edge IoT computing system called DromTalk for dormitory applications in NCTU. Conventional approaches are difficult to interact with IoT servers of different platforms. The authors' approach proposes a novel method that uses a cyber IoT device to nicely bridge the IoTtalk server in the cloud and the DormTalk servers at various dormitory buildings (the edges) without modifying these servers. The authors investigate the response time performance of the edge DormTalk server, which shows that smartphones can effectively control the dormitory appliances with good user experience.
