Are Backdoor Mandates Ethical?—A Position Paper

Abstract

A growing number of jurisdictions have passed so-called backdoor laws, which mandate the inclusion of a vulnerability or weakness in software code, for the benefit of law enforcement agencies. In this position paper, we examine the trade-off involved in this scheme in the light of four different ethical systems, with particular emphasis on how academic research can inform the discussion.
