“…We therefore question the alleged parallel porphyrinogenic activity of HCV infection and the HFE gene C282Y mutation that has previously been suggested by some authors [10,11]. We presume that, in southern Europe, where the frequency of HCV antibodies in porphyrics is very high (even above 80%) and the C282Y mutation is only seldom detected, HCV infection functions pathogenetically rather as a triggering factor of PCT, while in central and north European countries, where hepatitis C morbidity is low, the porphyrinogenic effect of the mutation prevails in the HFE gene.…”
