Are Hepatitis C Infection and C282Y Mutation in Hemochromatosis Gene Independent Factors for Porphyria cutanea tarda?

We presume that, in southern Europe, where the frequency of HCV antibodies in porphyrics is very high (even above 80%) and the C282Y mutation is only seldom detected, HCV infection functions pathogenetically rather as a triggering factor of PCT, while in central and north European countries, where hepatitis C morbidity is low, the porphyrinogenic effect of the mutation prevails in the HFE gene.…”
