Are men talking their reproductive health away?

Abstract: The advent of mobile phones has revolutionized communication trends across the globe. As the popularity of mobile phone usage continues to escalate, there is now growing concern about the effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic waves (RF-EMW) exposure on biological tissues, such as the brain and testes. Researchers have sought to link the much debated decline in human sperm quality in the last decade, with increased exposure to RF-EMW, particularly through mobile phone usage. In a recent systematic review an… Show more

“…The current study revealed a decrease in motility ratio and the progressive motility percentage in patients with prolonged cell phone daily use ≥4 h/day, while the decline in sperm mean count/ejaculate in those patients, did not reach statistical significance when compared to controls. These results are in line with previous studies that found a significant negative effect of cell phone exposure on human sperm motility [1] , [2] , [7] , [10] , [27] , [28] , [29] , [30] . Adams et al.…”

“…Constant use of electronic devices also contributes to poor sleep hygiene. Exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic waves radiation emitted by mobile phone use could potentially exert harmful effects on the testis [105] . One meta-analysis found that mobile phone exposure is associated with reduced sperm motility and viability [106] , whilst another study found this adverse effect on sperm motility and viability occurs only in vitro [107] .…”

“…Although there are yet no conclusive certainties about this phenomenon during the years, different factors have been proposed to be involved in the accumulation of risk factors for infertility and for male infertility. These factors could be either related to social changes as well as to lifestyle [47,48], such as smoke of tobacco [49][50][51] and marijuana [52][53][54], alcohol [55,56], medications [57] and caffeine [58], but also to the environmental pollution, such as pesticides, solvents [59,60], electromagnetic fields (EMFs) [61][62][63] and compounds able to interfere with the endocrine control of biological functions.…”
