Are specialist physicians missing out on the e‐Health boat?

Abstract: Fellows have not incorporated computers into their consulting rooms over which they have control. This is in contrast to general practitioners who have embraced computers after the provision of various incentives. The rate of use of computers by physicians for electronic prescribing in consulting rooms (11%) is very low in comparison with general practitioners (98%). One reason may be that physicians work in multiple locations whereas general practitioners are more likely to work from one location.

“…Although early research reported a reluctance by patients to use email as a communication medium with their physicians [10,12], more recent studies have shown patients to be mostly willing to embrace the idea [13-17]. In examining the barriers and facilitators to physician-patient email communication, recent studies have suggested patient age [18,19], patient race [18,19], patient health status [18], physicians’ satisfaction with their work [20], physician specialty [21], and physician workload [22] to be correlated with email usage. Despite the presence of a few scholarly explorations within this niche, more studies are necessary to determine specific aspects of physician adoption of email as a communication medium.…”

“…One of the many e-Health advantages mentioned in the recent article by Osborn et al 1 is the availability of clinical support systems. For example, they allow the majority of general practitioners (GP) to easily generate referral letters incorporating comprehensive patient information, including past medical history, allergies as well as current medications.…”
