Are the Changes in China’s Grain Production Sustainable: Extensive and Intensive Development by the LMDI Approach

Abstract: Abstract:China has experienced an uninterrupted growth of grain output during the past decade. However, a long-term analysis indicates fluctuations in productivity and output levels, as well as dramatic shifts in grain crop mix and regional distribution. This paper, therefore, re-examines the major factors behind the dynamics in China's grain production over the period of 1978-2013. The Index Decomposition Analysis technique, facilitated by means of Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index, is employed to factorize the … Show more

“…Feder (2018) provided a measurement method of TFP considering the change in bias technology: Specifically when the productivity of lower (or higher) cost factors increases, the bias factor's productivity component increases (or decreases). Li et al (2016) and Li, Yu, Baležentis, Zhu, and Ji (2017) use LMDI to measure China's productivity, and Miao et al (2018Miao et al ( , 2019 combine DEA with Luenberger indicators to measure environmental production technology and environmental performance.…”

“…Environmental pollution received increasing attention. According to China’s 12 th Five-Year Plan, China's fertilizer orientation changed from “promoting development” to “promoting regulation”, and this change focused on improving the utilization rate of fertilizer [ 6 ]. The SE decreased slightly.…”

“…Moreover, all crop SE values changed from positive to negative, and this change represented a switch from promoting FU to reducing the use of fertilizer during the period from 2015 to 2017, ultimately causing a sharp decline in the SE. The reason for this reversal was that the demand for scale was no longer sufficient to meet agricultural production [ 27 , 6 ]. As shown in Fig 3 , controlling the sowing scale and improving the FU efficiency is the correct solution to reduce the amount of fertilizer [ 46 , 47 ].…”
