Are We Measuring the Relevant Indoor Pollutants?

Abstract: Concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measured indoors may exceed their odor thresholds, but are usually far below TLV estimates. Even applying additivity to eye and airway irritation effects, it is difficult to rationalize increased sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms by exposure to generally chemically inert VOCs in the indoor environment. Several studies suggest that chemical reactions in indoor air are linked with SBS symptoms and the examination of these reactions may be necessary in order… Show more

“…In particular reactive compounds with one or more functional groups are rarely detected indoors, because of their short lifetime, and because conventional sampling and analytical techniques are not appropriate (Wolkoff et al, 1997;Wolkoff and Nielsen, 2001). New sampling and analytical techniques need to be developed.…”

“…Recentemente foi proposto 52 que reações entre COVs insaturados e oxidantes (ex. : terpenóides e O 3 ), podem levar a produtos que causam irritação nos olhos e nas vias respiratórias muito maior do que a gerada a partir de reações envolvendo COVs quimicamente menos reativos (ex.…”

“…However, symptoms (such as headache, drowsiness, fatigue, and confusion) have been recorded in subjects exposed to 22 VOCs (Hudnell et al, 1992). In addition, many harmless VOCs can react with oxidants such as ozone, producing highly reactive compounds that can be more harmful than their precursors (Sundell, 2004;Wolkoff and Nielsen, 2001;Wolkoff et al, 1997).…”
