Arsenic contents and physicochemical properties of agricultural soils from the Red River Delta, Vietnam

Abstract: To evaluate arsenic (As) levels in agricultural soils of the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam, surface (0-5 cm) and subsurface (20-25 cm) soil samples were collected from 18 paddy and six upland fields on both sides of the river. As a reference, forest soils were also sampled at two sites of the upper river basin. The total As contents of approximately 80% of the surface paddy and upland soils exceeded the maximum allowable limit for Vietnamese agricultural soils (12 mg kg -1 ). Arsenic contents higher than… Show more

“…Bore core sediments were extracted with 1 M HCl over 30 min to determine HCl-extractable As. Physicochemical properties of the bore core sediments including particle size distribution, total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB)-extractable and ammonium oxalate-extractable Fe oxides and hydroxides (Fe d and Fe o , respectively) were examined by the methods described by Phuong et al (2008).…”

“…Sequences belonging to the classes Alpha-and Gammaproteobacteria rarely occurred at this site (<3 %). Overall, sequences of this core were closely related to ubiquitous microorganisms previously recovered from marine or terrestrial environments contaminated with heavy metals (Selenska-Pobell et al, 2001;Akob et al, 2007;Bruun et al, 2010;Kampe et al, 2010), from soil (Phuong et al, 2008;Schouten et al, 2010), water, groundwater (Sahl et al, 2008) and petroleum crude oil samples (Yamane et al, 2008). Bacterial communities of the Ligurian Sea core KESC9-30 were composed of Proteobacteria (classes Alpha-, Beta-and Gammaproteobacteria), Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes and candidate division OP8.…”

“…Organic As compounds such as dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) are potentially carcinogenic to humans (IARC, 2012). Arsenic contamination of rice and paddy fields has been reported in many Asian countries (Meharg and Rahman, 2003; Liao et al, 2005; Williams et al, 2005; Phuong et al, 2008; Zhu et al, 2008; Hsu et al, 2012), and ingestion of rice is among major routes of human exposure to As (Carbonell‐Barrachina et al, 2009; Li et al, 2011; Oguri et al, 2014). A maximum inorganic As concentration of 0.35 mg kg −1 has been adopted as a standard for husked rice by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (2016).…”
