Ever since large amounts of Bell Beaker complex pottery were first discovered within megalithic graves in north-western France, the Bell Beaker has been tightly tied to the ‘megalithic phenomenon’. However, the fact of construction of these various kinds of megalithic monument during the Middle to Late Neolithic pre-dates the users of Bell Beakers. While this is a case of the re-use of older funerary monuments, it is assumed that Bell Beaker funerary practices witness a shift from Neolithic collective burial to individual inhumation. For a long time finds from the megalithic graves have constituted our main source of information on the Bell Beaker complex in north-western France. However, these ‘artificial caves’ have biased our understanding of the Bell Beaker complex and, in particular, of its funerary practices. The re-assessment of old finds and recent large-scale excavations have brought to light a large number of new sites, revealing a greater diversity in Bell Beaker funerary practices in the region than had been perceived previously. In the first part, we set the broader picture, stating what we know or can say about funerary practices during the Recent and Late Neolithic (3350–2550 bc), before the beginning of the Bell Beaker phenomenon. We then discuss the different Bell Beaker burial practices (2550–1950 bc), their chronological and regional variabilities, and, above all, the research biases that might have affected their understanding.

During the 5th millennium Angoumois-type dolmens -tombs comprising a passage and a quadrangular chamber characterized by high-quality stone working -appeared in west-central France. During a recent collective research and evaluation program (2012 -2015), excavations, multi-method prospecting, and technological and architectural analyses have yielded new data. Megalithic monuments are part of a landscape that has been profoundly transformed by people, and are reflections of a desire to erect social and territorial markers. Geophysical prospecting undertaken for the first time on and around these monuments has revealed original features that contribute to the monumentalization of the landscape in the same way as the fortifications associated with the world of the living. The excavations of the Petite Pérotte and Motte de la Jacquille (Fontenille, Charente) dolmens have enabled us to define both petrographical type and geographical origin of the monoliths as well as to bring to light the architectural choices made by the builders. The builders clearly focused on the monoliths of the funerary chamber, as exemplified by the construction of the stone door of Motte de la Jacquille, a unique example in European megalithism. This work goes beyond mere aesthetic preoccupations, and demonstrates a genuine investment of symbolism in megalithic construction. One of the most significant advances relates to the discovery of numerous examples of old structural stones in the construction of the Motte de la Jacquille funerary chamber. These point to the recycling of a previously existing funerary chamber, specifically deconstructed for this later occasion. Several scenarios are discussed to explore the possible motivations underlying such reuse.

Le site des Tailles du Clou se trouve dans le Nord-Est du département de la Creuse, près du village de Clugnat. Les vestiges se rencontrent sur environ 1 ha au sommet d'un plateau qui domine la vallée de la Petite Creuse. Les prospections réalisées sur le site depuis sa découverte en 2003 ont permis de recueillir une série lithique riche de plus de 15 000 pièces. Cet ensemble n'est malheureusement pas homogène et est le résultat d'une succession d'occupations depuis le Paléolithique moyen jusqu'au Néolithique final. Le manque d'homogénéité de la série nous a amené à dégager les différentes composantes à partir des critères technotypologiques. Les tris en fonction des états de surface ou des types de matières premières se sont avérés inopérants dans le cas présent. L'identification de la composante gravettienne au sein de la masse de vestiges récoltés s'appuie sur la présence d'éléments typologiques diagnostiques (pointes de la Gravette et microgravettes) et sur celle de modes de production laminaires et lamellaires. Tout élément pouvant appartenir à un autre faciès chrono-culturel n'a pas été pris en compte. Ce classement écarte ainsi la quasi-totalité des outils domestiques et une partie des lamelles à dos, trop ubiquiste. Un ensemble de 231 pièces sont rattachées à l'occupation gravettienne. Les différents éléments attribués à cette occupation font état d'une certaine homogénéité d'ensemble. Compte tenu du contexte, il faut cependant considérer que plusieurs phases d'occupation peuvent être présentes. La répartition du matériel par matière première montre un approvisionnement en direction du nord avec une prédominance du silex tertiaire de la région de Vicq-Exemplet (39 %) devant celui du Turonien supérieur du Grand-Pressigny (30,3 %) et du Turonien inférieur du Berry (29,9 %). Les modalités d'approvisionnement en matières premières, exclusivement orientées vers les formations siliceuses du Bassin parisien, tendent à rapprocher le site des Tailles des occupations de cette région. Le débitage laminaire des Tailles est relativement ubiquiste à l'échelle du Gravettien. Il est illustré par des nucléus à table cintrée où la bipolarité est dominante, ainsi que l'usage de la pierre tendre.
