Arterial Oxygen Saturation and Hemoglobin Mass in Postmenopausal Untrained and Trained Altitude Residents

Abstract: Because of lacking ventilatory stimulation by sex hormones in postmenopausal women (PW), one might expect a lowered arterial oxygen saturation (S(O(2))) in hypoxia and therefore a stronger erythropoietic reaction than in young women (YW). Nine untrained (UTRPW) and 11 trained (TRPW) postmenopausal altitude residents (2600 m) were compared to 16 untrained (UTRYW) and 16 trained young women (TRYW) to check this hypothesis and to study the combined response to hypoxia and training. S(O(2)) was decreased in PW (89… Show more

“…This is not fully unexpected because a larger stimulating effect of progesterone rather than estrogen on respiration has been described occasionally, but was not uniformly observed (reviewed in Cristancho et al. and MacNutt et al. ).…”

“…La testosterona no solo tiene un efecto estimulador de la eritropoyesis sino también inhibe la ventilación (28) , mientras que el estradiol inhibe la eritropoyesis y estimula la ventilación (29,30) . En ese sentido, un incremento en los niveles de estrógenos circulantes se asocia con mayores valores de saturación arterial de oxígeno (31) .…”

“…This is different to healthy subjects who always show a decrease of PaCO 2 at high work load. The arterial oxygen saturation in patients at rest is as low as in highlanders [46], [47] living 2600 m above sea level (inspiratory PO 2 approx. 120 mmHg).…”

“…But in spite of a similar reduction of spirometric values the female patients show higher PO 2 and lower PCO 2 than the male patients like their healthy counterparts. Probably the long-known stimulation of respiratory brain centres by female hormones important for fetal oxygen supply is the cause (reviewed in [47]). The fact that arterialized pH is equal in all subgroups in spite of differences in PCO 2 demonstrates the importance of acid-base homeostasis for physiological functions.…”
