“…The countries with the highest number of reviews were China (n = 14) [ 47 , 57 , 59 , 63 , 70 , 76 , 77 , 79 , 104 , 105 , 112 , 114 , 122 , 124 ], followed by Brazil (n = 13) [ 33 , 44 , 64 , 90 , 93 , 106 , 107 , 111 , 115 , 123 , 127 , 129 , 131 ], and Spain (n = 9) [ 36 , 38 , 41 , 43 , 45 , 52 , 68 , 103 , 110 ]. The number of studies encompassed in these reviews ranged from 52 [ 34 , 52 , 125 ] to 3 [ 102 ], with RCTs predominating the dataset.…”

“…In TMJ arthrocentesis, the upper joint space is irrigated by introducing one or two needles to achieve throughflow of fluid (saline solution) and lavage of the joint [24,25]. Systematic reviews have reported that TMJ arthrocentesis improves jaw function and reduces pain levels, and the execution of multiple sessions is superior to a single session [25][26][27]. Its effectiveness could be explained by the joint space expansion achieved, the breaking of joint adhesions with the introduction of fluid, and the washing out of inflammatory mediators and catabolites [26][27][28].…”

Its effectiveness could be explained by the joint space expansion achieved, the breaking of joint adhesions with the introduction of fluid, and the washing out of inflammatory mediators and catabolites [26][27][28]. Certain studies propose that first-line TMJ arthrocentesis has a variable and insufficient effect, resulting in either a significant or only a small decrease in pain scores, and either way with no improvement in mandibular movements when compared with conservative treatments.…”

“…Relative to those, injections of the face and neck are easy and involve few complications because the anatomic landmarks are clear. Injection therapies performed to treat TMD include TMJ injection (corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid, lidocaine), SNEPI (sympathetic nerve entrapment point injection), TTPI (tendon traction point injection), trigger point injection, botulinum toxin injection, prolotherapy, TMJ pumping, and TMJ arthrocentesis [1][2][3][4][5][6] . If injection therapy is appropriately performed when indicated and combined with other treatments, TMD can be treated easily and result in patient satisfaction.…”
